Maria Montessori was born in Italy in 1870. She became the first woman to graduate from the University of Rome Medical School in 1896. In addition, to being a doctor, Maria Montessori did research in psychiatric medicine and continued her education in philosophy, psychology, and education. Dr. Montessori was appointed Professor at the University of Rome in 1904. Dr. Montessori discovered how young children naturally adapted and enjoyed learning. Dr. Maria Montessori continued her work and findings, which she shared throughout the United States, Europe, and India. She founded training courses, an institute for research in Spain, and Montessori Training Centers around the world. Dr. Maria Montessori was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize three times.

“The child is both a hope and a promise for mankind.”

“ It is true that we cannot make a genius. We can only give to each child the chance to fulfill his potential possibilities.”

“The most important period of life is not the age of university studies, but the first one, the period from birth to age six; for that is the time when human intelligence itself is being formed.”

“ One test of the correctness of educational procedure is the happiness of the child.”

“The child is much more spiritually elevated than is usually supposed.  He often suffers not from too much work but work that is unworthy of him.”

Montessori Curriculum

“0 – 6 years are the most important years of a child’s life”Maria Montessori

Doctor Montessori’s philosophy was very centered around Peace Education. This is the core focus of the Montessori curriculum at Hillside Montessori School. Many Montessori Schools do not focus on this, but we do. Dr. Maria Montessori said:

if you want to have world peace you have to teach children how to get along with all the different cultures and people of the world.

We have many children from all different backgrounds at Hillside Montessori School. Our students learn together and help each other understand about themselves and the world they are to grow up in and shape.
